A
peaceful village surrouded by vineyrads. The ancient castel overlooks the town, site of
the world-famous symphony of the thirteen varietes wich go into the making of
Châteauneu-du-Pape wines. |

 The
papal castel : built in the 14th c., under order by pope John XXII, was the
summer residence of the Sovereign Pontiffs throughout the century. Heavily scarred by the
Religious Wars (16th c.) and party destroyed during the 2nd World War, all that exists
today are some walls, the dungeon and the cellar. Now called the Pontifical Cellar, this
room is the site of many specials events : banquets, exhibitions, induction into the wine
brotherhoods. There is a magnificent view over the Rhone Valley, onto the Dentelles de
Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. To get to the castel by car, take Orange direction. Take rue
Joseph Ducos on foot.
N.D. de l'Assomption
Church : located in heart the old village, the date of its construction is
unknown, but is certainly prior to 1155. It is a fortified Romanesque chapel (with a
defensive tower with loophole windows). Inside, a pulpit in Velleron stone by the sculptor
Laffite, lovely stained glass windows, gifts from various religious congregation, and the
statue of Saint Pierre de Luxembourg, the town's patron saint.
| The Theodoric Chapel :
this is the oldest monument in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This tiny Romanesque chapel is said
to have been built in the late 10th or early 11th century. When it was restaured in
1984-85, very old frecoes were discovered in the choir. Exhibitions are held here in
summer. |

Saint Pierre de Luxembourg : 18th century
The Oratories : There are still 7 in the
village, including the Saint Marc Oratory, located on the top of the avenue des Oliviers,
the Crucifix Oratory, on the road to Courthézon, and Oratory on the road to Orange, near
the Porte Rouge.
